Day Twenty Seven: Just Keep Moving

Today is the twenty seventh day in my journey towards my first triathlon.  Some of the dates and events on the way have changed.  I will be running a 5k in Seneca on March 19th.  Then on April 2nd, I will be running the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston.  I am very excited about that run.  My first mini triathlon is going to be in Statesville, NC on May 14th.  Thanks Dr. Gessler for the invite, I'm getting excited about it, and looking forward to seeing my friends from NC again.  Then I am doing another mini triathlon at Lake Lanier in GA on June 4th.  It will be my first open water swim.  Then finally I am looking for a half triathlon around my birthday in August.  So that gives the details as far as what I have planned for the next couple months.

Now on to the training.  It has been a while since I have written anything on here, and a lot of things have changed.  I am running a lot now, as much as three miles a day.  Not at the goal yet, but I am stepping it up, while still listening to my body.  I think that is going to be the critical thing in this journey, the balance between listening to my body and having the mental strength to push myself at times.

I have lost ten pounds of my goal of forty in the last two weeks.  It really makes the running a little easier.  I have made a concerted effort to eat cleaner and am going to really step up the efforts in the nutrition department.  I can only imagine how critical my nutrition is going to be as the training gets more and more difficult and more draining on my body.

It has been great to hear from people that may not be training for a triathlon, but are accepting the challenge to do something for their fitness this year.  If nothing else comes from this training and blog, it will be worth it to see some other motivated to change their lives.  It has been great to see one of my best friends and my pastor, Scott King, take the challenge to do something this year.  There are so many others who are going to take part in different races, and it keeps me going.

I have learned so many things during this journey, but  one of the most important is just keep moving.  Everyday is going to be great, but as long as I keep moving there is nothing that can stop me.  I am committed to see this thing through, and I am so glad to motivate others.  I am more convinced than ever that what began as just a goal to keep me in the gym, will become a journey that changes my life and maybe even the lives of others.

Day Ten: Starting Over

You know I have learned in life that setbacks are going to happen.  I have been battling a cold for almost a week now and running has been the last thing on my mind.  I have struggled to get through the days and all the cold medicines most days.

Today is a new day, and I am thankful for it.  I am feeling better than I have since before I got sick.  Feeling my energy come back and ready to get back on the road in the morning.  Sometimes setbacks just serve to show us just how much we want to achieve our goals.  It would be easy to walk away, not because of the cold, but we all know how hard it is to get our routines changed to include the good things that we need to do each day.  We also know how easy it is to lose those good habits and get lazy.  I am excited to be able to get back to those good habits I had set, and get back to training.

Also, I have been asked to do several different events in the upcoming months from different people.  Friends on Facebook and from church have asked me to different events.  I am planning to do the Cooper River Bridge Run on April 2, the Norcross Corners to Crossings 10k on April 17, and the My First and Next Triathlon at Lake Lanier on June 4.  I have also been asked to participate in the Statesville Rotary Club Sprint Tri in Statesville by Dr. Walter Gessler, who is also training for it.  I would really like to be ready for it, and maybe get some of my NC friends to do it also.  If any of my NC friends read this and want to participate, I would love to.

I am excited, not about seemingly starting over, but about reaching the goal, and then setting new goals!

Day Seven: A Week of Setbacks

Well I sit down to write this blog tonight after a week of setbacks and not being able to train.  I only ran five miles this week, before I got a really bad cold.  It is really hard to run when you can't breathe.  If I sound a little down tonight, it is because I am.  I was hoping to get in at least twenty miles this week.  I am not even sure what to say tonight.  I feel so let down by this first week.

There were a couple bright spots in the week, I found out that some more people are going to compete in some of the 5k and 10k races that I am planning to do to test my legs before the mini triathlon in June.  My best friend also told me he is going to train and do the mini triathlon with me in June.  It is becoming quite a team that is training for this event.  So I guess it was a good week after all.  Hope to have more to talk about next week.
